The ingredient list was found here

Ingredients:

 Water

Water doesn’t need any explanation, does it?

 Propylene glycol

(Systematically propane-1,2-diol)
It is a colorless, non-toxic alcohol. In creams, it is used as a dissolving agent. It is also a humectant (it increases stratum corneum hydration by attracting and holding water molecules in there). It works as a weaker hydrating agent in emulsions where oil droplets are dispersed in water. It might cause skin irritation, but it’s unlikely to happen if the concentration is low and the individual isn’t extremely sensitive.

Cyclomethicone

It is a volatile compound. It is a cyclic molecule (There is a 10-atom ring of alternating Si and O atoms, and there are two CH3 groups on each Si atom) and it works as an occlusive agent, which means it forms a layer on the surface of the skin, which isn’t permeated by water and moisturizes the skin by hindering the evaporation of water. It isn’t “greasy” and it leaves the skin with a dry feeling, so it’s good for people with oily skin. Silicon is hypoallergenic.

 Dimethicone

Dimethicones are linear, and the properties are more or less the same as those of cyclomethicone.

Titanium dioxide, Zinc oxide

Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are used also e.g. in powders for coverage. For medium coverage, both oxides are used (titanium oxide has greater coverage than zinc oxide). They also protect skin against UV.

Isopropyl palmitate

It is an emulsifier (emulsion is a mixture of two unmixable liquids, where one of them is dispersed e.g. in the form of very small droplets in the other; emulsifier is a chemical that allows emulsions to exist). Isopropyl palmitate is a suitable emulsifier for oil-in-water emulsions, which is the case of BB cream. Without an emulsifier, the phases would be separated.

Talc

Talc is a trivial name for hydrated magnesium silicate. It is the main component of powders (and make-ups have powder base). It has to be sterilized and it’s imported to the Czech Republic from Korea (among other countries).

Butylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate

Emollient, dispersant and solubilizer

Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate

This compound is used as a UVB filter.

Dipentaerythritylhexahydroxystearate/hexastearate/hexarosinate

and

Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone

Emulsifiers. (Almost untraceable in literature, on top of that…)

Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil

It’s one of the highest quality oils used in cosmetics and it’s expensive. The tree is among other places grown in Asia (significant “grower” is China). It works well for all skin types, and it’s suitable for sensitive skin as well. It penetrates skin very well and it’s perfectly tolerated. It’s stable. It has SPF 5; however the efficacy depends on the interactions between all compounds used in the formula. It contains e.g. folic acid, alpha tocopherol (vitamin E), and zinc.

Arbutin

Arbutin is a skin whitening agent, because it interferes with melanin synthesis (it’s an inhibitor of tyrosinase).

Ethylhexyl salicylate

It is a UV filter.

Magnesium sulfate

Mg2+ have an anti-inflammatory effect and participate in accelerating the recovery of skin barrier.

Polyglyceryl-4 isostearate

An emulsifier.

Adenosine

Adenosine is reported to have anti-wrinkle effects. (I couldn’t find the original article on adenine online, but I found one that concerned suitability of a dissolvable film for anti-wrinkle effect localization and they used adenosine as the active compound.)

Camellia sinensis leaf extract

Extract from tea tree leaves - yes, the ones we use to make teas for drinking. For information about tea, I found a wonderful, skeptical article concerning several “trendy” chemicals that are said (by the sellers, obviously) to be miraculous. I’m in love with the authors, seriously, I wish there were more such articles.
Anyway, the article concerns specifically green tea. Green tea does have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-UVA and anti-UVB properties, which can reduce aging of skin. However, the authors point out that the important compounds found in green tea are unstable and since they’re hydrophilic, it’s not easy to make them penetrate the skin and stay “inside” for long enough to actually have any effect. Also, the concentration of the active compounds in cosmetic products might be too low. They mention that only one valid study was conducted and the results definitely didn’t prove green tea doing wonders overnight. In 8 weeks, no major improvement in skin condition was visible. However, it seemed possible for the tea to have certain long-term efficacy.

Madecassoside

It has anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing effects, a test (described in the abstract of “Clinical, biometric and structural evaluation of the long-term effects of a topical treatment with ascorbic acid and madecassoside in photoaged human skin.”) showed that it caused diminution of wrinkles, improved elasticity, firmness and skin hydration.

Aloe barbadensis leaf juice

Aloe vera is one of the few natural, erm, things that definitely have a positive effect on human skin. The most important chemicals in aloe are the polysaccharides and amino acids that can bind water very effectively, so they work as hydrating agents.

Nelumbo nucifera flower water

I admit I have no idea what “flower water” is supposed to be. So I’ll write about lotus parts it might relate to in general. According to J Songhee’s article, there are several methyl esters of common fatty acids, out of which palmitic methyl ester induces melanogenesis. Which is kind of interesting, because the author suggests it might be useful in prevention against graying hair or as a part of tanning products (and I thought BB creams claimed to have whitening effects, if anything). It might also help against hypopigmentation. However, if the name water implies there are no lipids, then this is irrelevant.
The rhizomes of lotus (organs corresponding to roots) have anti-inflammatory properties.

Triclosan

Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent (against bacteria, but also yeasts and molds) used in creams. It was proved to be safe to  use (you can find the  article with further details  in my sources’ list).  It has also anti-inflammatory effects. However, it is an endocrine disruptor (source: university lecture).

Ceramide 3

Ceramides belong among sphingolipids. There are 6 kinds of them in human skin, ceramide 3 has proportional representation of about 5%. They’re part of membranes and create an emulsifying system for the correct hydration of skin. As skin ages, the number of ceramides decreases and it’s important to supply skin with emulsifying agents, and ceramides are good for this, because they’re present in skin naturally. However, the most important ceramide is no. 2 and as isolated ceramides are very expensive, the amount used in cosmetics is way too low.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a sterol that works as an emulsifier in water-in-oil mixtures. It is abundant in cellular membranes.

Lyceum Chinese fruit extract

Lycium Barbarum, also known as Goji. What is relevant to cosmetics are the antioxidant properties.

Helianthus annuus (sunflower) extract

It seems to actually be sunflower oil. Sunflower oil contains vitamin E. It is an antioxidant and when topically applied, it reduces both acute and chronic photodamage of skin. It also reduces roughness of skin, length and depth of wrinkles. It increases hydration of skin and ameliorates its water-binding capacity. It gets rid of free radicals and works as an emollient.
It also contains vitamins A, D, K.
In general, sunflower seed oil has a similar lipid composition to stratum corneum and it causes increase in cholesterol and ceramide synthesis. Sunflower seed oil components easily penetrate skin.

Cornus officinalis fruit extract

Exhibits antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Hedera helix (ivy) extract

Naturally occurring ivy nanoparticles were the subject of a study designed to find out a suitable replacement for TiO2 and ZnO in sunscreens. The ivy nanoparticles are much less toxic and can protect skin against UV-induced damage. Ivy leafs also contain saponins that have antibacterial effects.

Schisandra chinensis fruit extract

S. chinensis contains lignans, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
It also contains certain weak organic acids: e.g. citric acid, malic acid and tartaric acid. These acids have astringent properties when used in low concentrations (in high concentrations they work as a chemical peeling, but obviously such concentrations aren’t present in BB creams). If these fruit acids are applied over a long period of time, they thin stratum corneum and supports the production of collagen, which maintains skin’s firmness. Last but not least, they get rid of fine facial wrinkles and they help with skin hydration (mechanism unknown as of 2011). Another compounds found in S. chinensis are phytosterols, working as emollients. Vitamins C (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, photoprotection, increased synthesis of collagen, skin whitening) and E (antioxidant, free radical scavenger) are also present.

Dimethicone/vinyldimethicone/methicone silsesquioxane crosspolymer

These work as emollients and make application of the cream easier. Skin tolerates these really well and as I already mentioned, they make the finish of the foundation comfortable to touch.

Portulaca oleracea extract

I forgot to mention these before, but most of the plant whose extracts were used grown in China and/or Korea. This is yet another chinese plant that is traditionally used for easing pain and swelling. It also contains antioxidants.

Piper methysticum leaf/root/stem extract.

Kava has antiseptic properties. However, even though it has been a subject of many studies (especially related to cancer treatment, insomnia, anxiety and liver toxicity), the only other cosmetic effect it might have is prevention of grey hair, but I don’t think a BB cream is meant to prevent your peach fuzz from graying.

Disteardimonium hectorite

Controls viscosity (= it’s one of the “structural” things, doesn’t really have any effect on the skin itself).

Trihydroxystearin

It increases thickness of the product and delays water loss from skin. I admit this information comes from a website that doesn’t link any source of this information. However, since it is derived from hydroxystearic acid and stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid, at least the thickness increasing part sounds logical.

Glycosyl trehalose

Stabilizes emulsions and forms films. Again, didn’t manage to find any accessible article nor mention in any of the cosmetic chemistry books.

Aluminum hydroxide

Seems to be used to prevent agglomeration of the TiO2 particles. There were some voices warning against accumulation of Al inside the body because of excessive use of skincare products containing this metal, as it might cause oxidative damage of skin. However, a comprehensive article about aluminum stated that it penetrates skin very poorly. Sensitivity to topical application of Al (e.g. in cosmetics) is very rare.

Aluminum stearate

Aluminum stearate is a gel-forming compound. As some of the previously mentioned chemicals, it also increases the density of the “oily” part of the cream and therefore stabilizes the emulsion and increases its termostability.

Hydrogenated starch hydrolysate

Humectant.

Methicone

These are more or less my guesses based on what I read about silicones: might increase the efficacy of sunscreens and help mask wrinkles. They also create semi-permeable films, so that pores don’t get clogged. But I admit this particular paragraph is definitely not 100% sure, as methicone itself wasn’t mentioned in any of my sources.

Tocopheryl acetate

This is a stable derivative of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) and it seems that topical application of this compound can increase not only occurrence of this form in the skin tissue, but also of the alpha-tocopherol form, especially in UV-B irradiated skin.

Glycerin

Glycerol aka propane-1,2,3-triol, an alcohol. It’s used as a hydrating agent.

Caprylic/capric triglyceride

Skin moisturizer.

Ubiquinone

OK, even if you slept through all of your high school chemistry classes, you must have heard “coenzyme Q10”, another name for ubiquinone, about a zillion times. It’s probably the most popular ingredient in all advertisements. My textbook warns that the advertisements fairly exaggerate, but says it’s still important in skin treatment as it is an important enzyme (well, yes, it is) and that it works as an antioxidant (that’s true as well). However, what confuses me is that I clearly from our biochemistry course remember (and my classmates who have taken the class this year confirmed they were told this too), that the professor emphasized how utterly useless topical application is. In general, most of the CoQ10 present inside our cells is synthesized “from scratch”, small part we acquire from our diet. The weight of CoQ10 should be around 860 Da. Cell membrane is permeable to molecules smaller than 150 Da. So, it can’t just creep inside the cell through the bilayer. However, there are naturally transport mechanisms for uptake of larger molecules and a study showed that keratinocytes in medium containing CoQ10 can take it in. However, even if in general CoQ10 can be absorbed inside the cell, its function as an enzyme is only relevant to living cells. Yet epidermis, composed of multiple layers, has about 20 - 30 layers of completely dead cells (stratum corneum, the upper layer) and 3 - 5 layers of stratum granulosum underneath, which are basically cells in the middle of dying. So I suppose that to be actually effective, the CoQ10 would have to somehow get through 30 layers of dead cells, whose main purpose is to prevent junk from getting inside our body. Considering that 1 g of CoQ10 costs about 40 CZK while 1 g of sodium hyaluronate costs about 140 CZK, it’s certainly not out of question that the miraculous effects of the above mentioned compound are mostly just a huge exaggeration and something, that sounds “cool”, doesn’t cost way too much and doesn’t do any harm. However, if someone has a study about the opposite, I’d be thrilled to read it and forward it to our professor as well.

Hydrogenated lecithin

Lecithin softens the skin, refattens it (this is an awesome word!) and makes you skin feel better and isn’t greasy. It also makes drug penetration through stratum corneum easier

Phytic acid

Also known as IP6 or inositol hexaphosphate. It is an antioxidant with strong anticancer activity. It works against negative effects of UVB and increases the vitality of cells exposed to UVB. It works both before exposure to UVB (decreases tumor incidence and multiplicity in mice) and after (decrease of cell death and cell cycle arrest). Even though it’s a polar, charged molecule (because of the phosphates), it can penetrate skin well.
It also diminishes the synthesis of melanin and therefore reduces pigmentation.

BHT

Butylhydroxytoluene. Antioxidant.

Fragrance

Wow, this is very informative - thanks for telling us, Skin79! So we know you added some sort of scent.

Phenoxyethanol

Preservative (because you don’t want to have a cute microbial colony inside your foundation tube).

Methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben

Unpopular preservatives. They are antimicrobial agents, but also allergens. What worries most people though is their potential character as endocrine disruptors, both weakly estrogenic (mostly female reproductive system) and androgenic (mostly male reproductive system). In skin cells, there is an enzyme capable of hydrolyzing topically applied parabens to a compound with no/low ability to act as endocrine disruptor. However, the question is whether the levels of this enzyme are high enough to deal with all the parabens applied on our skin.
Also, one might use multiple products containing compounds with estrogenic/androgenic activity and therefore increase the overall concentration (and risk of having health problems caused by them). (Underarm antiperspirant/deodorants and breast cancer, 2009). However, a later study mentions that there hadn’t been many human studies (Do Thyroid Disrupting Chemicals Influence Foetal Development during Pregnancy?, 2011). What I understood in general is that we don’t have enough information to be able to predict the effects paraben use can have on our health, because there are other important factors - the overall amount of parabens and other endocrine disruptors absorbed through various products (not only cosmetics, but also food and pharmaceuticals). I wasn’t successful at finding a huger amount of recent studies, rather it seems that scientists concentrate on finding alternative preservatives without adverse effects on the human body. I have to admit that I’m quite surprised that with all the plant-derived ingredients present in this BB cream, the company haven’t tried substituting the parabens with a combination of potentially safer compounds.

Questionnaire:

Pretty pretty please, would you give me some feedback on this article? Since I’m writing this kind of articles for you, it’s really important for me to know your opinion and I’d be super grateful for it. What did you like and what you didn’t like? Any tips to write this kind of article in a better way next time?
Would you have preferred if I always cited the article where I got the info from right behind the sentence (which is fairly common) or would that make the text difficult to read and you’re OK with a sources list only at the end? I could do reference links to the article list too, but it would kill me as it would mean inserting a lot of anchor tags.
Also, is there any special type of product (or brand) you'd like me to write about next time?

Thank you very much for your time - both reading the article and answering the questions. <3

Yours truly
Vita

Analýza ingrediencí: Hot Pink Super Plus BB Cream (Skin79)

Upozornění:

Nejprve si prosím přečtěte tento článek

Seznam ingrediencí nalezen zde

Ingredience:

 Voda

Voda žádné vysvětlení nepotřebuje, ne?

 Propylenglykol

(Systematicky propan-1,2-diol)

Bez emulgátorů by fáze byly oddělené.

Talek

Zvláčňovadlo, dispergovadlo a rozpouštědlo.

Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamát

TPoužívá se jako UVB filtr.

Dipentaerythritylhexahydroxystearate/hexastearate/hexarosinate

a

Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicon

Adenosin

Adenosin by měl působit proti vráskám.

Látky obsažené v zeleném čaji mají protizánětlivé a antioxidační účinky a chrání před UVA a UVB, což zmírňuje stárnutí kůže.

Madecassosid

Má protizánětlivé účinky a pomáhá proti stárnutí, v abstraktu článku “Clinical, biometric and structural evaluation of the long-term effects of a topical treatment with ascorbic acid and madecassoside in photoaged human skin.” se píše o testu, který prokázal, že došlo k redukci vrásek, zlepšení elasticity, pevnosti a hydratace pokožky.

Cholesterol

Zvyšuje hydrataci kůži a zlepšuje její schopnost zadržovat vodu. Krom likvidace volných radikálů ještě funguje jako změkčovadlo.
Olej dále obsahuje vitamíny A, D a K.
Obecně má slunečnicový olej podobné složení lipidů jako stratum corneum a zvyšuje syntézu cholesterolu a ceramidů. Jeho složky snadno pronikají kůží.

Extrakt z plodů Cornus officinalis

Má antioxidační a antimikrobiální vlastnosti.

Vitamíny C (antioxidant, protizánětlivé činidlo, ochrana před poškozením v důsledku nadměrného ozáření, látka zvyšující syntézu kolagenu a zesvětlovač) a E (antioxidant, likvidátor volných radikálů) jsou taktéž přítomné.

Dimethicon/vinyldimethicon/methicon silsesquioxan crosspolymer

Trihydroxystearin

Zvyšuje hustotu krému a oddaluje ztrátu vody z kůže.

Stabilizuje emulze a tvoří filmy.

Glycerol neboli propan-1,2,3-triol, alkohol. Je používán jako hydratační činitel.

Triglycerid kyselin kaprinové a kaprylové

Zvlhčuje pokožku.

Ubichinon

(Underarm antiperspirant/deodorants and breast cancer, 2009). (Do Thyroid Disrupting Chemicals Influence Foetal Development during Pregnancy?, 2011).

      A děkuji <3

  3. Ahoj,

    1. OK, děkuju moc za zpětnou vazbu! <3

O krémech jsem přemýšlela, i když vyloženě žádný, co by mě nadchnul nějak extra, nemám :/ Ale zkusím posbírat tipy/udělat anketu a něco vymyslet :)
