DIY Tutorial: Temperley London (A/W 12-13) Inspired Belt

The inspiration:

http://www.fashionising.com/runway/b--temperley-london-aw-12-20225.html

I remember downloading a whole lot of their A/W collection photos right after they appeared online. But it wasn’t until my dear parents got me the Marie Claire runway special magazine that I realized I had to DIY the belt that appeared in many of the outfits walking down the runway. I love it when designers get inspiration from Slavic culture - it always makes me happy and proud about my origin. Also, it’s a very nice change, compared to the usual Soviet Union/poor Eastern Europe jokes, people not knowing Czechoslovakia doesn’t exist anymore, Prague being confused with Moscow etc. To be fair, my fellow countrymen and -women aren’t that better, as they promptly trash our own culture at every occasion they have. And well, I really do like Slavic history and culture. So, anyway, time to show my inner crafty Slavic girl.

The result:
I decided to make the back part of the belt elastic so that I can wear it over thin skirts and blouses as well ad thick winter coats without having to do any difficult fastening. To make it more versatile, I didn’t sew any decoration on - brooches do the trick and you can change then within seconds.

Material:
I’m proudly announcing I solely used old scraps of things left behind by various grandma and old aunties; I didn’t even buy the thread. Anyway, for you guys:

Piece of velvet ribbon about 20 - 30% longer than is your waist circumference
3 pieces of velvet ribbon about 30 cm long
1 piece of velvet ribbon about 40 cm long
Iron-on interfacing
Ca 120 cm of sturdier ribbon
Ca 100 cm of elastic
2 pressed studs
Thread
Pliers
Scissors
Several needles of varying thickness
Sewing machine
Brooches

Time:
3 hours

Difficulty:
Beginner (if you can make a tote bag, this will be easy too)

How to:
1) Take the part that will be your future waistband and double-fold the ends, sew.

2) Sew on the pressed studs, I prefer to have the half with flat backs against my stomach, therefore on the velvet side of one end. That means the other half of the studs will be sewn on the wrong side of the ribbon on the other end.

3) Try if fastening works, if there are issues, use the pliers to shape the studs so that you can fasten them easily.

4) Put it away for now and make the bow.
5) Take the iron-on interfacing and iron it onto the 3 30 cm pieces of ribbon, cut the ends of the 40 cm one in a diagonal shape.

6) Fold the 40 cm one as you see in the pic and sew.

7) Fold the 30 cm pieces into loops and sew in the middle (make sure it’s in the middle, not shifted towards either side!).

8) Fold the loops into bows and sew in hand, I recommend using a thicker needle and pliers.

9) The most difficult part, put the 3 bows next to each other and sew them together. Don’t try to pierce all of the fabric at once, it’s almost impossible.

10) Fold the 40 cm piece as you see in the pic and sew the rosette on it.

11) Measure how wide is half of the rosette.

12) Mark the width of half-rosette on the belt (start from where is the upper end of the belt when it’s fastened with a pin (white).

13) Mark ¼ of you waist circumference from the (white) pin. Use two pins of the same color (red). This is really important, because the center of your belt is where the white pin is, not where the fastening is!!!!

14) Turn the belt wrong side up and make lines where the red pins are.

15) Between the two lines you just made, sew 3 (or more/less, depending on the width of your ribbon and thicker ribbon) tunnels made from the sturdier ribbon.

16) With a safety pin, pull the elastic through. The elastic piece should be a bit shorter than ½ of your waist circumference.

17) Secure both ends of the elastic with pins.

18) Sew twice through the ends to secure them.

19) Arrange the elastic so that the belt is gathered evenly.

20) Now sew the rosette on so that its center lies on the white pin.

And it’s done! Now just gather all your brooches and play with it. I think that symmetrical ones look better, but they don’t necessarily have to be round. I’ll show you several looks I like the best.

A v neposlední řadě mám slovanskou kulturu a historii prostě ráda.

3) Zkuste, zda zapínání funguje a případně doupravte tvar patentků kleštěmi, kdyby zlobily.

4) Dejte to stranou a zaměřte se na mašli.
5) Nažehlete vlizelín na 3 30 cm kusy stuhy a tomu 40 cm zastřihněte konce šikmo.

6) 40 cm přehněte dle obrázku a prošijte.

7) Přehněte 30 cm kusy do kroužku a veprostřed prošijte (djete si pozor, aby to skutečně bylo uprostřed a ne posunuté k nějaké straně).

8) Složte kroužky do mašličky a prošijte, použijte silnější jehlu a kleště.

    1. Thank you! Would love to see your take on this ;) And yes, I definitely can't buy new materials until I use up at least half of what I have, otherwise I'd die one day, being suffocated by all the fabrics and ribbons that have piled up. >.>
